Details: Good gem-quality carnelian (orange to red chalcedony agate) has been found along the north side of hwy 140 at the turn off to the Virgin Valley opal mines.  Alluvial float material can be picked up over a large area, and seams of carnelian can be found in the rhyolite hillside north of the highway.

Swordfish Mining - Jun 16, 2012 11:37:14 AM EST The site is on a National Wildlife Refuge and only personal use and no commercial collecting is allowed. There is a 7 pound per day limit on all materials combined on the refuge. The private opal fee digs are not bound by this regulation. For more info on opals. Go to www.virginvalleyopal.com
