Details: According to the forest service website, you can find small pockets of opal on "the west side of the mountains near West Valley Reservoir." You are only allowed to surface collect here, this is in the Modoc National Forest area. Proceed with caution because these directions are not specific enough for my liking.
Directions: I've marked the GPS coordinates for West Valley Reservoir, and I'm sure no one will believe that the opals are in the middle of the lake. However, just in case be careful where the GPS device tells you to go. There seems to be a large mountain southwest from it that is a possible candidate for this opal deposit.
