Details:
North of Pecos you can find the abandoned mine dumps of the Terrero Mine. You can find rocks for cutting and polishing and mineral specimens namely pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, barite, and fluorite in the mine dumps. On the road cuts there may be agates. I found this information from several sources. An accessible online source (limited to pages viewed) is here at Site 28 p. 60:
Directions: A map and directions are on the reference link. You take highway 63 north from Pecos for 13.4 miles, and at the Terrero store you take a right up the hill for 1 mile scavenging the rock piles on the sides of the road before the campsite.
