Location Type: Public Access
Details: This is a brand new roadcut location that I plundered everything I could find at the eye-level. Well, I tried to be thorough but then I tried to be quick since my wife was shopping. There is a lot of calcite here, especially ranging from tan color, amber color, to brown. There was also some dark bladed crystals that was a little purplish. There is also marcasite, specks of pyrite on calcite, limonite, and greenish inclusions in the calcite that I think is malachite on top of marcasite. Crystal varieties range from nub shapes to bladed crystals.
Directions: Off of the Blue Route Roark Valley Road) going north from Main St. (76) take a left on the new section of Falls Creek Rd. Immediately you will see the roadcut all the way up the hill. This is where I searched.

Comments (Most recent are first) | Scott (webmaster) - Apr 15, 2010 01:47:32 PM EST Sorry about the errant posting behavior. I'm working on fixing that. Do you have any information safe to share with the public? You can add a collecting location or I can add it for you. Thanks for your information. :) |
Pyrite - Apr 14, 2010 05:34:33 PM EST The marcasite is not stable and forms sulfuric acid as it decays. An unstable marcasite should be keep away from other minerals. It is a geological mystery why many marcasite specimens are unstable and some are not. I have a miners dollar from Illinois that has been stable for years.

Pyrite - Apr 14, 2010 05:25:06 PM EST There is several places in North West Arkansas that have pyrite and marcasite. There are fossils in the Fayetteville Shale that are preserved in pyrite especially the nautiloids.

Pyrite - Apr 14, 2010 05:21:18 PM EST I have collected very nice drusy quartz on the east side of Hollister. I have a large piece in sandstone that weighs about 70 ponds in my flower bed. I posted this but it did not appear?

Pyrite - Apr 14, 2010 05:16:56 PM EST I have collected some very nice drusy quartz in Branson at a subdivision on the east side of Hollister. I have one in my yard that weighs about 70 pounds. The host rock is sandstone with quartz vugs in the matrix.

Scott (webmaster) - Apr 14, 2010 11:16:02 AM EST Same here. I've had myself convinced the other way a couple of times, hence the term "Fool's gold". |
Pyrite - Apr 13, 2010 09:11:17 PM EST Wish it was real gold. Plenty of pyrite all across southern MO. A deal in the Fayettevile shale. |
Scott (webmaster) - Mar 1, 2010 10:21:24 AM EST I visited this place during the past weekend and briefly searched roadcut part towards the intersection and did not find anything more. I'm sure the top of the hill has some washout places that may yield more, but I didn't go there. |
