You may need a 4WD SUV to get up this trail that comes off of highway 68, and you may need some luck to split open a mica schist rock with staurolite crosses. Also there are plum colored garnets. For more information try looking at site 22 on pp. 50-52. Here is the link to that online book copy (limit on number of pages to read): http://books.google.com/books?id=RtW9j8k-iKEC&lpg=PA39&ots=C4baIcRyf8&dq=rockhounding%20in%20new%20mexico%20near%20los%20lunas&pg=PA62#v=onepage&q&f=false | From intersection of highway 68 and 585 in Taos, go on 68 from Taos for 10.3 miles and turn onto an unmarked road. Eventually there will be a big boulder blocking the road and some 4wd SUVs can make it around the 2 miles to get to the area. |
