This is a fee-pay mine for digging for opals (especially fire opals) in Nevada. Here is a quick description from their website: "The mine opens May 20th and closes September 30th, 2010. The mine is closed on Mondays. Our operating hours are from 8am to 4pm. The fee is $60.00 per person/day. Children 12 and under are FREE with paid adult. Rock Club members (with proof) receive a $10 discount. Reservations not required."
Go to their website for more information: http://www.bonanzaopals.net/index.html | Directions to Bonanza Opals Mine, Inc From Winnemucca, Nevada: * Take Hwy 95 north 33 miles to Hwy 140. * Turn Left and head West toward Denio Junction, about 66 miles. * At Denio Junction, turn left and continue on Hwy 140. * After about 24 miles you climb a mile-long grade, and then in another mile turn left onto the graded, gravel road. You will see several signs for the opal mines in this area.
From Lakeview, Oregon: * Take Hwy 140 east approximately 83 mile into Nevada and the Sheldon Wildlife Refuge. * When you pass the highway rest area on your right, you are about 1/2 mile from the graded gravel road on your right. Follow the directions below from the graded road.
Once you're on the graded, gravel road: * Two miles down the road is a FREE campground with a warm spring fed swimming pool, showers (fed by the same warm water), fresh, clean drinking water, pit toilets, and areas for campfires. * At the campground, turn right. * In another 100 yards, take the right fork go 4.5 miles to a signed road for the Bonanza Opal Mine. travel up this road past the Opal Queen Mine, continuing through the gate for the Bonanza Opal Mine. * Follow the road to the left up to our digging site, where our experienced miners will educate you on finding opals in our large digging area.
