This mine is open occasionally for rockhounds to collect gemstones such as star rose quartz, aquamarine, and tourmaline. They now have a website at http://hoggmine.com/. They currently do regularly scheduled digs and no reservation is required. You just need to show up at the mine. However read ALL of the details on the website including instructions for fees and safety and such. These are some of the pertinent info: "Q: Will I need to bring my own tools? A: Yes, you will need to bring any hand tools you wish to dig with. Q: What type of tools will I need to bring? A: Pick, Shovel, Potato Rake, Rock Hammer, Sledge Hammer, Chisels, Rock Bars, 5 Gallon Buckets, Gloves, Safety Glasses, (Limit one 5 gallon bucket of material per person and one yard rock per dig.) Q: What kinds of Gems are at the mine? A: Beryl, Star Rose Quartz, Black Tourmaline, and Aquamarine. Q: How much does it cost? A: $35 Per person over 16 years of age. The mine's website says the directions are: "FROM I-85 S Take Exit 13 and turn left onto 219 (Whitesville Road). You should now be heading south on 219. FROM I-85 N Take Exit 13 and turn right onto 219 (Whitesville Road). You should now be heading south on 219. Stay south on 219 for about 3.5 miles. As soon as you pass mile marker 5 (on your left) the entrance will be the first driveway on the right." |
